Causes For Burst Water Pipes

Water pipes can burst quickly and suddenly, leaving your entire house wet in minutes. In this article, we are going to go over a few common causes for bursting pipes and ways that it can be prevented.
We’ve touched on this in one of our earlier blogs, but since this is relatively common, we’ll go over it again. Freezing temperatures can cause the water inside a pipe to freeze, thus expanding the pipe beyond it’s normal size. Water pipes are not designed to stretch, so they burst under the pressure of the ice.
The way to prevent water pipes from freezing and bursting is to make sure the pipes stay above 32 degrees. Insulating pipes with a foam cover is one good way to ensure they wont drop below freezing temps. There is also a special tape called heat tape that will keep the pipes warm in the winter months. It’s very easy to use. Simply wrap the tape around the pipe being sure not to leave any spaces. When the temperatures are below freezing, it’s good to open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to let the heat warm up the air around the pipes. The final tip for keeping your pipes from freezing is to make sure there are no leaks or spaces that allow frigid air to enter your home. Check seals around doors and windows to ensure the house is not letting a draft in.
